Reflecting on the science around severe COVID-19 and how better understanding to help clarify unexplained observations.
Since their introduction in December 2020, COVID-19 vaccines have reduced deaths due to the pandemic by at least 57%, saving more than 1.4 million lives in the WHO European Region. Most of those saved were aged 60 or older, the group at highest risk of severe illness and death from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The first vaccine booster alone saved 700 000 lives.
Why have African countries embraced Covid vaccines considering how well their populations did without them?
Have the African leaders discounted the observation of exceptional outcomes just to keep up with the Joneses?
Looking at Zambia in the images below. Population of Zambia is 19.47 million people.
Peak deaths in Zambia during the Omicron wave was just over 250 people.
Zambia had already faced the full Omicron outbreak with less than 16% of their population vaccinated and overcome the pandemic. Most of the population would have been exposed and therefore have natural immunity.
Why would they then risk vaccinating their people against COVID-19?
Africa should have taken the lead after demonstrating they had the best outcomes. Imagine where the world would be if that had happened.
