Our research points to an autoimmune response to ACE-2 as the primary trigger for immune dysregulation in COVID-19. In the vaccinated, the vaccine spike protein can bind to serum ACE-2; this may lead a persistent low-level autoimmune response. Due to priming of the immune system through vaccination, an autoimmune response could be triggered earlier than normal on re-exposure to the viral spike protein through COVID-19 infection or further vaccination.
