My personal recommendations for managing a case of COVID-19 is based on prior scientific research and clinical observations.
Pre-covid strategy
The most important risks to address before infection is vitamin D supplementation and management of inflammatory bowel disease.
What am I referring to as inflammatory bowel disease?
Formally diagnosed condition such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
Irritable bowel disease
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
Food intolerance (gluten, dairy, nuts, histamine intolerance…)
This cohort is relatively broad and could represent up to 20% of the population in some countries. Certainly more closely associated with a western type diet. These issues if not managed appropriately, can be linked with higher risk of severe COVID-19 and long Covid.
In truth, this is so important that many patients will benefit from fasting to ensure the gut associated symptoms of diarrhoea, constipation or bloating are completely resolved.
In covid strategy
The sequence of events during infection are important to understand in order to think about what could be a useful strategy.
The interferon response is usually the first indicator of a viral infection. This may be associated with feeling mildly tired but no aches. Just different from normal.
Appetite loss is a signal sometimes combined with taste and smell abnormalities. Omicron has less of an association with these symptoms which is different from the earlier variants.
